I believe that every artist needs a studio.
Every place I've ever lived has always had my studio. One of the first things I plan for in my studio is Flexibility. I will change the layout constantly. The next thing is Capability-the ability to paint every size and type of art I want
I always want to be able to bring people into the studio to see works of my art. Good lighting gives me a chance to live with my art and make changes as I realize I should have done it a little differently. (that happens a lot) It also gives the oils a chance to finish drying
My studio also houses my Video Production Suite and serves to keep my website somewhat up to date, enables me to produce my instructional videos, and manage my inept social media accounts
Of course the heart of the studio is Painting! The studio consist of large and small, vertical and flat surfaces and easels, a bewildering array of brushes, and Steve's personal art inventions and modifications to make studio life more fun and efficient
Visiting the studio means you will see works in progress, watch Steve paint, learn about the materials and methods Steve uses and much more
Come see us! I always appreciated visits to my artist studio. I will try to make sure you enjoy your visit to my Studio.
It all started with a trip to the pine barrens in New Jersey. The purpose of the trip was to provide "assistance " to my father and members of his photograpy/nature club in their attempt to photograph saw whet owls. I had exactly NO idea what I was in for. When we got to the site we located the owls in a few minutes. However, there was one problem: the owls were high up in a pine tree.
The Biologist who was with us outfitted me with a field jacket with oversized pockets, and instructions. I slowly and quietly climbed the tree, gently picking up and placing the owl in one of the pockets, climbed back down and placed it on a lower branch. 62 Years later I am still overwhelmed with memories of that day. I was set on my life's path.
After graduating from the University of Delaware, I was determined to get a job as a wildlife biologist. Fate had other plans. Newly married to the love of my life, Kathy, we were on our honeymoon traveling around the West when we stopped at Jackson Wy. Stunned by what I saw in the art galleries, I spent the rest of the trip home planning how to become a wildlife artist.
For the last 50 years I have been an artist, gallery owner, art instructor, art mentor, director of art centers, picture framer, Giclee art printer, and art consultant. One challenge remained. To devote the last phase of my career to the painting of outstanding western wildlife art in the mediums of Oil and Acrylics. I hope you will follow along with me.
